Richard "Moe" Maloney has announced that he will retire as Boston College's head baseball coach effective May 31, 1998, Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo announced Wednesday.
"We would like to thank Moe for his 10 years of loyal service to Boston College as our baseball coach," DeFilippo says. "He is a quality person, and we wish him nothing but the best. I am happy to report that Moe is interested in remaining at BC in another capacity."
Maloney took the reins at BC following the 1988 season, replacing Eddie Pellagrini, the longtime Eagles' mentor who retired after coaching at the Heights for 31 years. In his 10 seasons at the Heights, Maloney guided the Eagles to six 20-win seasons and three Beanpot Tournament titles. His overall record at BC was 191-209-4.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my 10 years as the head baseball coach at Boston College," Maloney says. "I now look forward to pursuing other opportunities at the school."
DeFilippo says he will begin a search to fill Maloney's position immediately.
