BURLINGTON, Vt. ? Junior forward Brian Gionta?s hat trick propelled Boston College to its fourth straight victory, a 6-1 win over Dartmouth in the opening game of the Sheraton/Howard Bank Hockey Classic at the University of Vermont?s Gutterson Fieldhouse. Gionta opened the scoring for the Eagles (9-5-0) at 5:34 of the opening period, and followed with two more goals in the first 12:25 of the second period to give Boston College a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Jeff Giuliano stretched the margin to four goals at 13:59 of the second period. Senior defenseman Mike Mottau and junior forward Mike Lephart each added one goal in the third period to put the Eagles up by six goals with 11:14 remaining. Three Eagles had multiple-assist games, with senior forward Blake Bellefeuille collecting three. Senior Jeff Farkas and freshman Krys Kolanos added two each. Dartmouth?s Frank Nardella got the Big Green on the board with a power-play goal at 10:28 of the final period. The Dartmouth goal snapped Boston College?s shutout streak at 190:56, dating back to the Eagles? 4-2 win over Northeastern on November 30. The power-play goal also broke the Eagles? streak of penalties successfully killed at 33, dating back to a 4-2 loss to Maine on November 14. Gionta?s hat trick was the sixth of his career, tying him for seventh on the school?s all-time list. The last Boston College hat trick came when Farkas scored three goals against UMass-Amherst on October 23. Freshman goalie Tim Kelleher earned his fourth win of the season, stopping 23 shots. Boston College will meet Vermont in the tournament?s second round on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
