BURLINGTON, Vt. ? Senior forward Jeff Farkas scored all five Boston College goals to lead the Eagles to a 5-4 comeback win over host Vermont in the final game of the Sheraton/Howard Bank Hockey Classic at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The victory, the fifth straight for Boston College (10-5-0), gave the Eagles their first holiday tournament championship since the 1988-89 season.
Boston College fell behind at 6:33 of the opening period on a goal by the Catamounts? Bryson Bisniuk, but Farkas, the tournament?s Most Valuable Player, would answer with a pair of goals just 44 seconds apart to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with two minutes left in the first period. Vermont tied the score before the end of the period on a goal by Benoit Lampron.
Vermont (4-9-2) took a 3-2 lead with 29 seconds remaining in the second period on a Kevin Karlander goal, but the final period belonged to Farkas and the Eagles.
The senior completed his fourth career hat trick at 3:30 of the third period to tie the game, then added goals at 6:27 and 13:03 to give Boston College the lead for good. Vermont closed to within one on a Graham Mink goal with 4:31 to go, but junior goalie Scott Clemmensen was able to preserve the win down the stretch for the Eagles.
Farkas? five-goal performance set a tournament record and tied the Gutterson Fieldhouse record for goals in a game.
Junior forward Brian Gionta, who had a hat trick in Wednesday?s 6-1 win over Dartmouth, assisted on three of Farkas? goals. Senior defenseman Mike Mottau also had two assists.
Clemmensen finished with 24 saves as the Eagles outshot the Catamounts, 32-28.
Boston College will return home to face Brown at Kelley Rink on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.
