Boston College opened its fencing season on Nov. 20 with meets at Brown University. The men opened up with a 2-0 record and the women brought home a 4-0 record in their matches. The men faced Johns Hopkins and Tufts, while the women battles Johns Hopkins, Army, Wellesley and Tufts.
Three Fencers went undefeated to start the men's team off with an unblemished record. Senior Luke Mountain went 6-0 in the sabre, junior Greg Shea went 6-0 in the foil and junior Zakee Howard won six bouts (three in the epee against Johns Hopkins and three in the foils versus Tufts) to lead the Eagles.
In the first official dual meet matches in women's sabre, sophomore Becky King won 10 of 12 bouts to help lead the women's team to a perfect start. Senior Holly Russell (foil) juniors Regina Lennox(epee) and Michelle Guevara (foil) and freshman Kate Boyle (epee) all had ten wins apiece for the Eagles.
Prior to this season, the women's dual meets consisted of four fencers each in two weapons: the foil and the epee. Beginning this season, women's meets will have three fencers in each of the three traditional weapons: foil, epee and sabre. This change was made to standardize the men's and women's competition formats.
Both the men's and women's teams will return to competition on Dec. 4 at Brandeis.
