CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. ? Senior forward Jeff Farkas scored two goals and added three assists to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 7-2 HOCKEY EAST win over Merrimack before a crowd of 3,432 at Kelley Rink.
The game marked the league opener for both teams.
Trailing 2-1 early in the second period, Boston College (2-0-0) scored the game?s last six goals to earn the victory. BC sophomore forward Jeff Giuliano evened the score at 2-2 at 6:01 of the middle period. Senior Blake Bellefeuille gave the host Eagles a 3-2 advantage with an unassisted tally at 13:13 of the same period, and junior Mike Lephart closed the period?s scoring with a goal at 17:45.
Farkas netted the first two goals of the third period ? the first on the power play, the second in a shorthanded situation ? to give BC a 6-2 cushion midway through the period. Senior Kevin Caulfield finished the scoring at 16:45.
BC freshman Tim Kelleher made his first collegiate appearance in net, recording 16 saves to earn the victory. Merrimack?s Tom Welby (43 saves in 53:13) and Cris Classen (six saves in 6:47) split the goaltending duties.
Boston College returns to action on Saturday, October 23 at UMass-Amherst. Game time is 7 p.m.
