Shannon Smith Wins New England Cross Country Championships

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior captain Shannon Smith won the New England Cross Country Championships held at Franklin Park in Boston on October 15. The 1997 All-American's time of 17:25 was three seconds ahead of the next competitor, Heather Capello of Providence College. Boston College finished in second as a team.
Freshmen sisters, Cate and Maggie Guiney followed Smith for the Eagles. Cate crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 17:40. Maggie crossed in tow, finishing with a time of 17:47 for sixth place.
Sophomore Nicole Portley scored next for BC in 17th place with a time of 18:06. Lisa McIsaac, a junior, crossed in 20th place for the Eagles with an 18:11. Sophomore Katie Ryan rounded out the BC scorers in 31st place with a time of 18:21.
In the Open race that preceded the Championship race, freshman Mary Tomer paced the eight Eagle competitors in ninth place with a time of 19:02.
