Tom Garrick joined Boston College's staff as an assistant coach in June of 2015. He arrived at The Heights after serving as an assistant and then associate head coach for the Vanderbilt women's basketball team.
Garrick, a native of Rhode Island, arrived at Vanderbilt as an assistant coach in 2009. He was then promoted to associate head coach in 2013. He worked with the team guards and helped in the development of Commodores then-rookie Rebeka Dahlman's emergence as one of the top players in the SEC.
While at Vanderbilt, Garrick was instrumental in in the success of Jasmine Lister and Christina Foggie, who completed their outstanding careers with the Commodores in the spring of 2014. Foggie led the SEC in scoring as a senior, became the school's all-time leader in 3-pointers and was a second-round WNBA draft pick. Lister, meanwhile, left her mark at Vanderbilt by shattering the program's record for minutes played and ranking No. 3 on the all-time list for assists. Both Foggie and Lister rank among Vanderblt's Top-10 all-time leading scorers in WBB.
In his first year with the Commodores, Garrick helped Vanderbilt advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and also played a role in Vanderbilt ranking second in the SEC in field-goal percentage and three-point field-goal percentage.
Prior to Vanderbilt, Garrick was the head coach at the University of Rhode Island from 2004-09. He first started working at his alma mater, URI, as an assistant men's coach in 1998-01. The Rams won the Atlantic 10 Championship that season. In 2001, Garrick became an assistant women's basketball coach alongside former head coach Boe Pearman.
Garrick played four years at Rhode Island, his first two years for Brendan Malone and the last two for Tom Penders. In his senior season, Garrick led the Rams into the final of the Atlantic 10 with a jaw-dropping performance vs. Rutgers. The guard poured in 50 points as URI defeated Rutgers on March 8, 1988, 104-73.
He proceeded to lead the Rams to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 1988. The team posted a program-best 28-7 and made a run in the NCAA Tournament with wins over Missouri and Duke before bowing out in the Sweet 16 round to Duke, 73-72. A point guard, Garrick still ranks in some of the all-time records -- 12th in the program's all-time scoring list (1,573 points), fifth in assists (189) and third in steals (189).
A member of the URI Athletic Hall of Fame, Garrick earned his degree in communications. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1988 and played four seasons in the NBA, including with San Antonio, Minnesota and Dallas. Garrick also has experience overseas having played in Germany, Turkey and Spain.
