Shelby Boyle was promoted to assistant coach after being a graduate assistant for two years and serving a short stint as the director of player development in the summer.Â
Boyle enters her third season as one of the rising stars in the profession, as she was the only assistant coach from the ACC to be awarded the WBCA's Thirty Under 30 list, recognizing the top assistants under 30.Â
Boyle has played a pivotal role in the development of Andrea Daley and Dontavia Waggoner.  Waggoner has turned into one of the top defensive players in the nation. She finished second in the ACC and ninth in the country with 99 steals. Her three steals per game were third in the league and 11th in the nation.Â
Waggoner set the single-season program record in steals and ended the year third all-time in school history with 200 swipes. She was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team for the first time in her career this past season. In 2022-23, she made the 2023 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List and was nominated for ACC Most Improved Player of the Year. She averaged 12.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.0 steals and shot a career-high 44.4 percent from the field. She was one of four players in the country to average at least 12 points, 6.0 rebounds, and three steals per game.Â
Daley made another leap this season, where she averaged a career-high 13.2 points, shot a career-high 50.3 percent from the field and 5.4 rebounds per game. The rising senior guard increased her scoring output by 3.6 points per game, was second on the team in scoring and fifth in the ACC in field goal percentage. Daley was nominated for ACC Most Improved Player of the Year and the All-ACC team.Â
Boyle in her first season as one of, if not the youngest assistant Power Five coach, helped the Eagles earn their first top-10 win since 2010 with a road triumph at then-No. 9/10 NC State.Â
Assisting with the posts, Maria Gakdeng led the team in total points (374), rebounds (214) and blocks with 58. She ended the season second all-time in school history with 131 blocks, while turning in career highs in points (11.3), rebounds (6.5) and assists per game (1.3).
Ally VanTimmeren hit a career high in field goals and free throws made, while five of her six outings in double figures came in ACC play, including a career-high tying 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting against Pittsburgh (1/29). She rising junior pulled down a personal-best 10 rebounds against Eastern Kentucky (12/13 ) and had a seven-game stretch where she averaged 9.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and shot 58.7 percent from the field.Â
"Over the past two years as our graduate assistant, Shelby's work ethic and positive attitude sets her apart," head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee said. "Coaching is her calling, and I am excited to watch her excel as she continues to elevate our program."
Boyle will assist with the organization of recruiting, including gathering recruit schedules, planning and helping execute official/unofficial visits, and connecting with AAU and High School Basketball Coaches. On the court, she will help with structuring player workouts as well as scouts for upcoming opponents.Â
"I'm thankful and excited to continue working at Boston College for Coach Mac," Boyle said. "She gave me an opportunity to be a grad assistant two years ago, and I am eager to help this program achieve new heights. Our players are amazing athletes and people, and I look forward to helping them achieve their goals."
She recently earned her master's degree in sports administration from Boston College. Boyle played for Division III Transylvania and graduated with a degree in business.
A native of Morgantown, West Virginia, Boyle was a four-year starter for the women’s basketball team at Transylvania. A team captain, Boyle averaged 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists as the Pioneers went 25-3 in 2019-20.
