Scott Wilkins enters his 14th season as head coach of the Boston College men's tennis team in 2016-17. Throughout his tenure, he has earned regional recognition, coached Eagles to new heights and navigated the BC tennis program through the Atlantic Coast Conference, regarded as one of the most competitive conferences in the country.
Wilkins has coached the Eagles to three seasons with 10 wins or more.
Wilkins guided the Eagles through a challenging schedule in 2016, tallying six wins that included victories against Connecticut, Hartford and Holy Cross. Senior Matt Wagner and sophomore Jeffrey Melvin earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete honors in 2015.
In 2014, Wilkins led the Eagles to wins over Southern New Hampshire and Hartford, as well as Army and Bryant. Wagner made the 2014 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team.
Wilkins coached Alexandre Thirouin to three ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors in 2013, when the Eagles earned wins over Southern New Hampshire, Sacred Heart and Hartford.
In 2012, Wilkins led the Eagles to a 6-15 record as they tallied their first ACC victory since 2008 with a 5-2 win over Miami at home. The season before, BC went 8-18 on the year.
Wilkins coached 2012 graduate Akash Muppidi, a three-time All-ACC honoree, who was the first BC men's tennis player to garner the conference award and become the first to earn an automatic bid into the main draw of the prestigious D'Novo All-American Tennis Championship, doing so in 2010 and 2011. In his four-year career, Muppidi was also named ITA Northeast Region Freshman of the Year and ITA Northeast Region Senior of the Year.
Classmate Alex Skinner and Muppidi were ranked as high as 38th in the nation as a doubles pair and first in the northeast in 2012 under Wilkins, going 9-9 and defeating five ranked opponents.
In 2010, Muppidi was tabbed the Northeast Player to Watch. In that season, Thomas Nolan also earned ITA Northeast Region Senior of the Year honors. Nolan and Erik Kreutzer ranked as high as 21st nationally in doubles.
Wilkins earned ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors in 2009, when the Eagles earned their first-ever national team rankings from ITA Tennis and College Tennis Online. He guided Nolan and Kreutzer to the second round of doubles in the 2009 D'Novo All-American Tennis Championship.
In his first season at the helm, the Eagles tallied a 10-9 record. In 2005, he led the Maroon and Gold to 11 wins, in 2009, they won 14 games and in 2010, they won 10 matches. The 2009 14-13 finish was the best finish since the Eagles joined the ACC in 2005.
Prior to joining Boston College, Wilkins was the head coach at Merrimack College from 2002-03.
From 1999-2002, he was a full-time assistant coach at Massachusetts, coordinating the program's recruiting effort, while also being involved with academics, conditioning, scheduling and budgeting. His contributions helped the Minutemen to a second-place finish in the 2000 Atlantic 10 Tournament, its highest finish ever.
Prior to that, Wilkins was the head men's and women's tennis coach at Babson College for two seasons. During his time with the Beavers, he coached David Weisman to the 1998 Division III individual national championship.
Following a successful playing career at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Wilkins broke into the collegiate ranks with his first coaching job at his alma mater as an assistant for the 1996-97 season.
The four-year letter-winner completed his career ranked 10th on the school's career singles list and was voted team captain in his senior year (1993-94).
Wilkins has also served as assistant tennis professional at the Weymouth Tennis Club from 1989-94 and as a tennis professional at Wellesley Tennis Club (1994-96, 1997-99). Additionally, he was the boys' varsity tennis coach at Milton High School in the spring of 1997.
