Scott Spinelli is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach at Boston College.
Spinelli arrived in Chestnut Hill after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Maryland. Additionally, Spinelli has been an integral part of the staff at Texas A&M (2007-11), Wichita State (2006-07), Nebraska (2003-06), Loyola Chicago (2001-03), American (1997-99), and Wyoming (1996-97) . He also spent one season (1999-00) as an assistant coach for the Cincinnati Stuff of the International Basketball League, and one season (2000-01) as a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Widely regarded as one of the top assistant coaches and recruiters in the country, Spinelli's impact at Boston College has been felt, as he has been the lead recruiter of seventeen total players (including the 2019 Class) over his four-plus seasons; seven of whom are current Eagles. Spinelli was the lead recruiter helping Boston College sign Jerome Robinson, who was the program's first-ever NBA Lottery pick. Robinson was the 13th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He was also the lead recruiter on fellow North Carolina native, and All-ACC Selection, Ky Bowman.
In addition to Robinson, Spinelli has recruited and/or coached six NBA Draft Selections and/or rookie free agents: Alex Len (#5, 2013), DeAndre Jordan (#35, 2008), Khris Middleton (#39, 2012), Jake Layman (#47, 2016), Donald Sloan (Undrafted FA, 2010), and Gal Mekel (Undrafted FA, 2008). Additionally, Spinelli recruited two outstanding players while at the University of Nebraska, Aleks Maric (All-Big 12 Selection), and Ryan Anderson (1,000 point scorer) who have both gone on to have successful FIBA professional careers. Â
From 2007-14 while at Texas A&M and Maryland, Spinelli helped his teams reach the postseason six times - four NCAA Tournaments, and two NIT appearances- all while helping Texas A&M to their greatest four-year win total in school history.
At Maryland, Spinelli helped the program land three recruiting classes, all nationally ranked in the top 25, including a top 10 class in 2014. The 2012-13 Terrapins won 25 games and reached an NIT Final Four. They were also the only program in the country to beat Duke twice in that season, with Spinelli having the game scout each time.
During his three seasons under Barry Collier at Nebraska, Spinelli led the recruitment of two nationally-ranked classes, helping the Cornhuskers reach the postseason twice.
Spinelli began his coaching career in 1990 as the head coach of Milford Academy in Connecticut, where he led the team to a pair of championships. He also started the basketball program at the Winchendon School, where he produced several Division I players.
A native of Leominster, Mass., Spinelli is a 1989 graduate of Boston University, where he was a member of the basketball team under coach Mike Jarvis, helping the Terriers advance to the NCAA tournament in 1988.
Spinelli, and his wife Lynn have three children: Gianna, Gabriel, and Joseph.
