Sean Guthrie is in his first year as director of player development for football at Boston College.
In this role, Guthrie - a former Eagles standout at defensive end who played four seasons in the NFL - works directly with the members of the football program, supporting their holistic development and growth. Through monthly team workshops and smaller group discussions, Guthrie serves to mentor all BC football student-athletes, focusing on character, leadership, and life skills while developing individualized development plans for each player.
A 2001 graduate of Boston College with a degree in accounting, Guthrie also earned his Master of Education from BC in 2014 as well as an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from his alma mater in 2021.
In addition to this key role with BC Football, Guthrie serves as the Assistant Head of School at the Fessenden School in Newton. In this role, he oversees professional development, initiatives on character education, and faculty recruitment, ensuring a high standard of excellence and goal alignment. From 2019-22, Guthrie served as the Head of Middle School at Fessenden.
Guthrie possesses over a decade of experience as an educator. For two years - 2017-19 - Guthrie served as a principal at the Young Achievers Science and Mathematics School in Mattapan where he led the school's over 100 staff members, with a focus on advancing academic outcomes, improving school culture, and fostering community engagement.
Before that, Guthrie worked as a principal fellow for Curley K-8 School and a 6th grade administrative team leader for Putnam Avenue Upper School. He also worked as a math teacher and head football coach for South Boston Educational Complex for seven years where he led the football team to its first Boston City Championship in 10 years.
