Fourth Season
John Murphy returned to the Boston College baseball staff in January 2019 for his third season overall with the program. He previously served as the Eagles' volunteer assistant coach for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He spent the 2018 season as an assistant coach at Army West Point.
Murphy’s duties with the Eagles include recruiting, working with infielders and hitters and video analysis.
The BC lineup was sixth in the ACC in hitting with a .289 batting average in 2019. The Eagles were second in the league with 94 stolen bases and third with 19 triples. Three BC hitters earned All-ACC honors, including Third Team third baseman Jake Alu, who was drafted in the 24th round by the Nationals.
In his one season as the Black Knights' hitting coach, Murphy helped Army head coach, and former BC pitching coach, Jim Foster reach the NCAA Raleigh Regional. Army posted an overall record of 37-24 and won the Patriot League at 18-7. The Black Knights hit .263, which ranked second in the conference, scored a league-high 331 runs and stole a league-leading 92 bases.
The Sacred Heart graduate was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the New York Yankees.

In 2016, he aided the Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009, first ACC Championship appearance since 2010 and first-ever appearance in the Super Regionals after BC swept the Oxford Regional. The Eagles tied for the second-most wins in school history and the fourth-best fielding percentage.

The Seymour, Conn., native was the starting shortstop for the Northeast Conference Champion Pioneers in 2012 and 2011. He was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America third team and the ABCA First-Team All-Northeast Region Team in his senior season. He earned All-NEC First-Team honors as a senior and second-team honors as a junior. Murphy also took home All-NEC Tournament Team accolades in 2012, going 5-for-10 with four RBIs, including a 3-for-3 performance in the championship game. In his sophomore season, he was named NEC Tournament MVP, going 5-for-13 with a home run, four runs and five RBIs. He led Sacred Heart as a senior with a .367 batting average, 76 hits, 13 doubles, eight triples and 47 RBIs. The Pioneers fell in the finals that season.

In 2012, he batted .308 and collected Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star honors while playing for the Bourne Braves.

As the highest draft pick in Sacred Heart history, Murphy played two years in the New York-Penn League and the South Atlantic League, recording 84 hits, including 11 doubles, 28 RBIs and 19 stolen bases over two seasons.

Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Sacred Heart. His family includes his mother, Anne, sister, Shannon, and his late father, Kevin, who lost his courageous battle with cancer. He currently resides in Brighton, Mass.
