STORRS, Conn. - Boston College Baseball (10-6, 2-1 ACC) defeated UConn (7-9) on Tuesday afternoon in a high-scoring, 26-19 contest.
Drew Grumbles started for the Eagles and went two and a third innings before being replaced by Jacob Burnham and John D Mitchell, who combined to go three innings. Luke D'Ancona, Chase Hartsell, and Sean Hard closed out the game for Boston College as Grumbles earned his second win of the season.
The Eagles immediately got on the board after Ty Mainolfi singled. Nick Wang launched his sixth home run of the year to make it 2-0. Immediately after the home run, Jack Toomey launched his fourth triple of the season before being brought in on a sacrifice fly by Esteban Garcia.
Boston College added five runs in the second as they jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. Mainolfi brought in the first two runs of the inning when his two RBI single scored both Danny Suroweic and Colin Larson. Wang made it three runs in the inning when his sac fly scored Julio Solier from third. The final two runs of the inning came from RBI singles courtesy of Garcia and Luke Gallo.
The Eagles made it 10-0 before the Huskies eventually scored in the bottom half of the third inning. Boston College's two runs came off a two-run home run courtesy of Larson that brought in Suroweic as well. UConn made it 10-3 after the third inning courtesy of two RBI doubles and an RBI single that chased Grumbles from the game.
Boston College made it 14-3 in the top half of the fourth inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Luke Gallo for the first run of the inning. Suroweic walked after the Gallo flew out, but the Eagles tacked on a second run when Toomey was called safe after stealing home. Easton Masse forced an error from the UConn defense, which allowed Garcia to score. The final run of the inning came on a bases-loaded walk from Mainolfi, which pushed the score to 14-3. The Huskies added a solo shot to make it 14-4 heading into the fifth.
The Eagles added just one run in the fifth when Suroweic singled home Jack Toomey and then kept UConn off the board in the bottom half.
In the sixth and seventh, Boston College would tack on a combined eight more, with Wang driving in two more via his second home run, as well as Mainolfi and Solier each driving in a run of their own. The Huskies, who would add 13 over those two innings, including eight in the bottom of the seventh, to prevent the run-rule.
The Eagles would be held scoreless in the eighth, the only inning in which they were held scoreless the whole game.
In the ninth, Boston College would tack on three more in the top of the ninth courtesy of Wang's third home run of the game, which also gave a career high eight on the evening. Both the home runs and RBIs were single-game highs for him. UConn would add two more runs in the bottom of the ninth against Hard, but the Eagles would hold on for the win.
