Women's Basketball Suffers Narrow Loss to Pitt

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College women's basketball suffered a narrow 64-61 setback to Pitt on Sunday evening in Conte Forum. The Eagles fall to 4-13 and 0-4 in the ACC, while the Panthers improve to 8-9 and 1-3 in the league.
Four players scored in double figures, with Lily Carmody netting all of her team-high 12 points in the second half on 4-of-8 shooting. She added three rebounds and four assists.
Teionni McDaniel scored 11 points, while Ava McGee registered 10 points and Amirah Anderson totaled 10 off the bench. Kayla Rolph grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and scored five. Athena Tomlinson carded five assists in 29 minutes with just two turnovers.
After BC held a 14-point lead following a Jocelyne Grier jumper in the fourth, the Panthers came back, scoring 20 straight points to pull out the win in what was a game of runs. Pitt went 7-of-13 from the field in the frame and hit seven free throws.
Trailing by nine coming out of the half, the Eagles put together a 20-2 run over a 6:45 stretch in the third period to take a 53-41 advantage going into the fourth. Five players scored during the surge, with Carmody scoring nine of the points. BC outscored Pitt 27-6 in the quarter after hitting 76.9 percent of its shots.
\McDaniel's hot start, coupled with stingy defense, led to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first. The graduate scored seven straight at one point for the hosts, while the Eagles held Pitt to just 27.3 percent shooting from the field and forced seven turnovers.
Pittsburgh responded in the second quarter, shooting 56.3 percent from the field with six of its nine field goals from deep. The Panthers took a 25-19 lead before layups from McDaniel and McGee sliced the gap to one possession. Pitt closed the quarter on a 10-3 run over the final 2:24 to claim a 35-26 halftime advantage.
BC totaled 23 points off turnovers and outscored Pitt 17-4 in transition.
The Eagles return to action on Thursday when they travel to South Bend for a 6 p.m. matchup against Notre Dame.
