Eagles will play Notre Dame in the first round of the ACC Championship on Tuesday night
BERKELEY, Calif. — Boston College Baseball (26-28, 11-19 ACC) fell 4-3 in extras to California (22-30, 9-21 ACC) in the series rubber match on Saturday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Jacob Burnham got the start for the Eagles, and the freshman turned in three scoreless innings to open the game, allowing just two scattered hits with no free passes issued. The Eagles opened the scoring in the third. With two outs, Josiah Ragsdale reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, and Patrick Roche put one in play, causing an E9 in the outfield to bring Ragsdale across from second and put BC up 1-0.
Burnham came back out for the fourth and hung another zero, with Sam McNulty and Vince Cimini linking up for a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame. The Golden Bears went up 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, with a pair of singles leading to a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to bring both runners home. After another bunt, a slow roller to second base brought another home to put the hosts up 3-1.
The sides traded zeroes in the sixth and seventh, with Cesar Gonzalez settling things down in relief, setting down the side in order in the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles drew one back in the eighth, with Vince Cimini muscling an RBI single through the infield to cut the deficit to 3-2. BC tied it at 3-3 in the ninth, courtesy of a Patrick Roche sacrifice fly. Cesar Gonzalez stayed in for the bottom of the ninth and came through, working a 1-2-3 inning to send the game to extras tied at 3-3.
In the bottom of the tenth, the Golden Bears put runners at the corners, and a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score from third, ending the game 4-3 in ten innings.
