Sam McNulty delivers walk-off bunt single to secure 2-1 series win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Baseball (13-12, 5-7 ACC) walked it off against Pittsburgh (16-11, 3-6 ACC) in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon, winning game three, 3-2, to claim the ACC series win and secure their second consecutive walk-off victory.Â
Brady Miller started for the Eagles, and tossed two shutout frames to open the game. Pittsburgh opened the scoring with a two-spot in the third, but Miller came back to work a scoreless fourth to end his outing. Kyle Kipp took over on the mound and hung a zero in the fifth, as the visitors took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.
Kipp continued to cruise, striking out four over three perfect innings to keep it a two-run game in the seventh. Patrick Roche led off the seventh with a single, and after a Jack Toomey walk, Gunnar Johnson grounded into a fielder's choice that brought Toomey home from second, making it 2-1. Two batters later, and Esteban Garcia tied the game, lining an RBI single through the right side, scoring Johnson from second and drawing even at 2-2 after seven full.
Kyle Kipp hung two more zeroes in the eighth and ninth, completing his five-inning relief appearance after facing only 18 batters, with six strikeouts and one walk to just two hits allowed. With one out in the final frame, Adam Magpoc drew a walk and advanced to third on a Gunnar Johnson single. Sam McNulty stepped up with one out and laid down a perfect bunt, scoring Magpoc and walking it off for the Eagles. Kipp earned the win (3-1) for BC.Â
Fresh off their first ACC series win, the Eagles will now prepare for a pair of mid-week contests at Northeastern and vs. Rhode Island, before hitting the road for a weekend series at Louisville starting Friday.Â
