Women's Basketball Falls Short in WBIT First Round

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Boston College fell short to Villanova 76-70 in the opening round of the WBITÂ Tournament in Finneran Pavilion on Thursday evening.Â
The Eagles finish the season with a 16-18 mark, while the Wildcats advance to face Saint Joseph's this weekend.Â
Teya Sidberry led three players in double figures with a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds.Â
Savannah Samuel tied a career best with 16 points on five field goals and went 5-of-6 at the line. Dontavia Waggoner did her damage at the charity stripe, shooting 8-for-10 and scoring 11 points.Â
The Eagles jumped out to an early 15-4 advantage after an Andrea Daley layup, capping off a 6-of-12 stretch and forced Villanova to miss eight of its first nine shots.Â
'Nova clawed back to within one possession before a Sidberry trey later in the period pushed the lead to eight, 22-14. A Jasmine Bascoe 3-pointer ended the period to give BC a five-point lead.Â
Villanova continued its momentum, building a 38-31 lead with 3:02 left in the half. Tatum Greene's 3-pointer started a 7-0 run that led to BC tying up the game at the half.Â
With Villanova leading 50-48, back-to-back 3-pointers from Samuela and Sidberry gave BC a 56-50 edge to give the Eagles momentum. In what was a game of runs, Villanova went into the final period with a 62-60 lead after a 12-4 surge.Â
The hosts went up by five early in the fourth before a pair of free throws by Samuel brought the deficit to one possession. However, five quick points from 'Nova extended the lead to eight, helping the Wildcats pull away for the win. Both offenses struggled in the fourth quarter, shooting under 30 percent from the field.Â
