No. 1 Eagles’ Nine-Game Win Streak Snapped in 4-1 Loss
BOSTON – No. 1 Boston College lost to No. 9 Boston University in the Beanpot Championship, 4-1, at TD Garden in front of a crowd of 18,258 on Monday night. The Eagles, who last won the Beanpot in 2016, dropped to 21-5-1 on the season and saw their nine-game win streak come to an end.
The Terriers (16-10-1) scored four unanswered goals after the first intermission, which saw BC take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Boston College's top line got the scoring started in the first as Ryan Leonard attracted a slew of defenders in the slot and fed the puck to an open Gabe Perreault on the right for a clean shot and score with Andre Gasseau adding a secondary assist.
A second-period giveaway in the neutral zone led to BU evening the game at a goal apiece. Nick Roukaunakis recovered the puck at center ice and sent a pass to Brandon Svoboda, who went topshelf, for the goal. Just over a minute later, the Terriers took the lead on a wrist shot to the blocker side by Cole Huston.
The Eagles, who went 0-for-3 on the power play in the second, had a power play opportunity moments later and got three shots on net early in the man-advantage, but were denied. At the other end, BU countered once at even strength, while BC goaltender Jacob Fowler stood between the pipes for back-to-back saves. Late in the period, Fowler stopped a breakaway and swiped the rebound away with his stick to thwart a Terriers' chance.
BU doubled its lead on another BC turnover in the third as Cole Eiserman intercepted a pass in the Eagles' zone and went one-on-one with Fowler to light the lamp and make it 3-1 with 6:08 left to play in the game. The Terriers put the game away in the final moments with an empty netter by Gavin McCarthy.
Fowler made 40 saves between the pipes for Boston College. BU's Mikhail Yegorov supplied 43 saves in the win.
