Volleyball Drops to Syracuse in Five Set Thriller

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (14-7, 3-5 ACC) fell 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 27-25, 28-30,12-15) to Syracuse (13-6, 5-4 ACC) in a five-set thriller Wednesday night in the Margot Connell Center.

Audrey Ross led the Eagles posting 19 kills and 20.5 points. Sophomore setters Aubrey Moore and Lucy Mott were all over the court tonight recording a combined 45 assists. Junior Brooklyn Yelland held down the back row posting 27 digs, recording a season high for herself. Freshman Bella Ehrlich led the defensive charge recording 3.0 blocks, including one solo.

The Eagles set the tone early taking a 7-1 lead, forcing a Syracuse timeout. The Orange responded, coming back with a 9-7 run, to get within three, trailing 13-10. A 4-3 BC run extended the gap to five as the Eagles took a 17-12 lead. Syracuse did not back down, coming within two, forcing a BC timeout. The Eagles continued to dominate as they extended their lead to 22-18, resulting in another Syracuse timeout. Two final blocks by Hoppes (2), Ehrlich and Roach secured the first set for the Eagles. BC took the first set 25-19.

The Orange came back strong in the second set, taking an early 9-4 lead. The Eagles fought back, with kills from Rach and Ross getting the Eagles within two, but the Orange's offense pushed Syracuse to a 17-10 lead, forcing a BC timeout. Despite kills from Rach (2) and Roach and a couple of attack errors, Syracuse took the second set 25-15.

Syracuse used a 7-2 run to open the third set, forcing a timeout by the Eagles, trailing 11-5. A 5-4 BC scoring run featuring kills from Marjanovic, Ross and Herrington shortened the gap to five, trailing 15-10. Going nearly point-for-point, the Orange maintained their lead, extending the gap to six with a 20-14 lead, forcing a BC timeout. The Eagles came back fighting with a 8-3 run featuring kills from Ross (2), Ehrlich, Marjanovic and Milliken, to get within three, trailing 23-22. A Syracuse attack error evened the score at 23 while a kill from Ross put the Eagles ahead for the first time in the third set. Despite evening the score again at 24 and 25, two solo blocks from Layne secured the third set for the Eagles, 27-25.

Syracuse did not let up, coming back with a 4-1 scoring run to get within one. The score evened again at 18 and 19 before an attack error put the Eagles in the lead, forcing Syracuse to call a timeout, down 20-19. Another attack error and a big kill from Herrington put the Eagles up 22-19, forcing another timeout by the Orange. Despite teams tying it up six more times, a Syracuse block and kill secured the fourth set for the Orange, 30-28.
