Early Surge Pushes Virginia Ahead of BC on Monday Night

Eagles' road stretch continues at North Carolina on Saturday afternoon
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Boston College suffered a 74-56 loss at Virginia on Tuesday night in the 31st all-time meeting between the two teams. The Eagles moved to 9-10 overall and 1-7 in ACC play. Fred Payne was a bright spot for BC, leading the team in scoring with 17 points and a career-high three steals. Chad Venning and Dion Brown chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively.Â

- Venning was the first Eagle in the scoring column, sinking two early baskets in the paint.Â
- BC was held to six points in the first eight minutes of action. Virginia jumped out to a 19-6 advantage.
- At the 11:49 mark, Donald Hand Jr. knocked down a three-pointer for the Eagles. It was the team's first and only triple in the first half.Â
- After an 11-2 scoring run by Virginia, the Eagles trailed 30-11 with 8:12 left in the half.
- Payne brought a spark off the bench and finished two layups in the final two minutes of the half.Â
- Virginia would lead - 41-23 - heading into halftime, following a 9-for-15 clip from three-point range in the period.Â
- Brown drilled a three-ball on the first possession of the half.
- After a second-chance finish by Brown with 16:43 to play, BC went over four minutes without a field goal.Â
- Payne picked off a Virginia pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup, halting the drought at the 12:19 mark. BC trailed 51-34.
- Virginia answered - engineering an 11-3 push - to lead 62-37 with under eight minutes remaining.
- Payne was the primary source of offense for the Eagles in the second half. With six minutes to play, he converted an and-one and buried a triple on back-to-back possessions.Â
- The Eagles capped off an 11-2 run, spearheaded by Payne, with 3:57 left.Â
- Three Eagles finished in double figures: Payne (17), Venning (14), and Brown (11).
- Brown finished with a team-high six boards and Joshua Beadle dished a team-high four assists.Â
- 13 of Payne's 17 points were scored in the second half.
- BC outscored Virginia in the paint by four points (34-30).
- Boston College moved to 9-22 all-time against Virginia.
- The Eagles were nipped twice last year by the Cavaliers. In 2022-23, the two teams split the regular season series.
- Boston College remains on the road to take on North Carolina this Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.Â
