Jacob Fowler posts 24-save shutout
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The second-ranked Boston College men's hockey team opened up the weekend with a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Providence on Friday evening at Kelley Rink. Jacob Fowler posted a 24-save shutout while Ryan Leonard, James Hagens, and Oskar Jellvik each scored for the Eagles.
BC improves to 15-4-1 overall and 8-3-1 in league play, while Providence drops to 15-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in Hockey East.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Eagles found the breakthrough midway through the second period. BC went on a 5v4 advantage after Providence was called for too many men on the ice and scored the opener. Passing the puck around the Friar defensive unit, Gabe Perreault found J. Hagens, who then quickly found Leonard at the back door for the tap-in to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
Boston College doubled the lead midway through the third period when J. Hagens tallied a goal. After receiving a nifty pass from Perreault, Teddy Stiga fired a shot towards goal that was saved. J. Hagens followed up on the rebound and was able to put the puck into the net from a tough angle with little room to work with.
As the clock ran down, and with Providence pulling the goaltender in search of cutting into the BC lead, Jellvik put the finishing touch on the game as he scored an empty net goal from center ice.
