Eagles Late Rally Falls Short as No. 19 Hokies Take Doubleheader
March 22, 2024 | Baseball
Game three between Boston College and Virginia Tech scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
In game one, the Hokies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a walk and series of singles, and would extend it to 4-1 in the fifth.
Two frames after Adam Magpoc (Torrance, Ca.) singled and scored on an RBI double from Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.), the Eagles rallied to take the lead in the fifth. McNulty reached on a single to set the table for Cameron Leary, who launched a two-run shot deep to left field, tying Joe Vetrano for third-most home runs in Boston College program history. Singles from Nick Wang (Newton, Mass.) and Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.) set up Kyle Wolff (Andover, Mass.), who drove a go-ahead, three-run homer to put BC up 6-4, his fifth of the year.
The Eagles held the lead into the ninth, when Christian Martin hit a three-run home run to put Virginia Tech up for good.
John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.) got the game one start and went 6.1 innings, striking out three with five hits and five earned runs. Tyler Mudd (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished the game and was charged with the loss (2-2). Andrew Sentlinger (1-0) earned the win for the Hokies, with Jordan Little picking up the save (2).
In game two, the Eagles and Hokies exchanged runs in the opening inning, with Kyle Wolff continuing his strong day at the plate with an RBI triple to score Vince Cimini.
Virginia Tech added runs in the second and fourth, taking a 4-1 lead into the eighth. The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in their half of the frame, when Kyle Wolff delivered once again, smoking a two-RBI double down the left field line. The tying run was ruled out at home, with the play at the plate preserving a 4-3 Virginia Tech lead.Â
Kyle Wolff finished the Friday doubleheader going 4-of-8 with five RBI, logging two doubles, a triple, and a home run, a single shy of the doubleheader cycle.Â
A.J. Colarusso (Leominster, Mass.) turned in a strong six innings of work, striking out four and allowing just one hit over his final two frames. Colarusso was charged with the loss (2-2), allowing seven hits and just two walks, while striking out six. Jordan Fisse (Ridgewood, N.J.), Gavin Hasche (Parker, Co.), and Eric Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.), all dominated in relief, combining for three shutout innings and just one hit allowed, facing just one more batter than the minimum.Â
The Eagles will look to take a game back against the Hokies in the series finale this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Harrington Athletics Village.
