Eagles Knock Off Blue Devils, Advance to ACC Championship Game
November 06, 2024 | Field Hockey
This BC's first trip to the championship game since 2019
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The third-seeded Boston College Eagles defeated the No. 2 seed Duke Blue Devils 2-1 (2-0 SO) on Wednesday evening. BC improves to 14-5 and will face the undefeated North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC championship game on Friday at noon. This is the first championship appearance for the Eagles since 2019, when they went on to reach the NCAA Final Four.
After a defensive-heavy first half, which primarily saw play in the midfield, Duke got on the board first three minutes into the second half on a penalty corner, with Kira Curland scoring off an assist from Macy Szukis. The Eagles struck back seven minutes later on a penalty corner of their own, as Madelief Grandjean fired a shot into the cage, assisted by Mia Garber and Juliette Hijdra. Neither team scored again before regulation time expired, sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Duke was awarded three penalty corners, each thwarted by the Eagles' defense. Neither team found the net, forcing a second overtime. With five minutes left in the second overtime, the Blue Devils had a scoring chance, but Yani Zhong executed a perfect tackle to remove the ball from BC's circle. Both teams attempted penalty corners but failed to capitalize, sending the game to a shootout.
Duke's Alaina McVeigh attempted the first penalty shot, but was denied by Charlotte Kramer. Kiki de Bruijne took the first shot for the Eagles, but she was also denied by Kaiya Chepow. Logan Clouser was next for the Blue Devils, but was blocked again by Kramer. Zhong scored for the Eagles on her attempt, putting BC up 1-0 in the shootout. After Kramer denied Charlie van Oirschot and Josephine Palde, Martina Giacchino scored on BC's fourth shot, securing the 2-1 victory and a trip to the ACC championship game.
The Blue Devils had the edge in shots (9-3), shots on goal (6-1), and penalty corners (10-3). Kramer recorded five saves for the Eagles.
Up next: Boston College will play North Carolina in the ACC championship game on Friday at noon at Kentner Stadium. The game will be streamed live on the ACC Network.
