Eagles Defeat UVA in Five Set Thriller

BC defeats Virginia in its final regular season match of the 2024 season
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- The Boston College volleyball team defeated Virginia in a five set thriller to close out the 2024 regular season by set scores of 25-20, 15-25, 25-9, 23-25, and 15-9. The Eagles close out the regular season, 15-17 and 8-12 in ACC play.
Audrey Ross led the afternoon tallying 16 kills and three aces followed by Halle Schroder who added 11 kills on a .391 hitting percentage. Schroder tallied her 14th double-double of the season and led the back row with 17 digs. Aubrey Moore and Sophia Lambros guided the offense adding 46 assists, Moore led with 26. Julia Haggerty led the night with seven blocks including three solo.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
SET 1: The first set opened evenly matched, the Cavaliers were able to gain an early four point advantage until the Eagles gained its first lead of the day into the media timeout. Haggerty, Cornelia Roach, and an ace by Morgan Riddle led the Eagles on its three point run, 15-14. The programs tied twice until a four point run by the Eagles forced the Cavaliers second timeout, 21-17. UVA was unable to respond with BC capturing three of the last four points, 25-20. Ross led the way for the Eagles adding four kills in the first.Â
SET 2: The Cavaliers responded in the second and shot out to a 15-10 advantage into the media timeout. Virginia's Milan Gomillion added two aces in a row out of the break only for Ross to answer with back-to-back kills, 17-12. The Hoos added one more to force the Eagles first timeout 18-12. The six point deficit was too great for BC to overcome with the Cavaliers securing four of the final five points, 25-15.Â
SET 3: The third set was all Boston College, securing the set 25-9. The Eagles shot out to an 11-6 advantage forcing the Cavaliers first timeout. The Eagles' run continued adding eight straight for an 11 point run. The Eagles went on to close out the set adding 11 of the final 14 points. The Eagles added five blocks in the third, with Haggerty and Jenna Pollock each adding two.Â
SET 4: The third set momentum continued into the fourth. The Eagles opened the match on a seven point run with back-to-back aces from Ross. CB then added four more forcing UVA to take its first timeout, 11-2. The Cavaliers responded out of the timeout adding seven of the next nine points closing the margin to four. Both programs went on to trade runs, until a six point UVA run provided the Cavaliers its first lead of the match, 23-22. A block by Haggerty tied up the score once more at 23, but UVA closed out the fourth set, 25-23.Â
SET 5: The fifth and first to 15 deciding set opened in the Eagles favor on a five point run led by Haggerty adding a kill and solo block. An ace by Ross forced the Cavaliers final timeout of the fifth, 7-1. The Cavaliers were able to go on multiple two point runs to land within five of the Eagles lead. The Eagles secured the match on Ross's 17th kill of the match, 15-9.Â
