Eagles End Regular Season With Seventh Win
November 30, 2024 | Football
Boston College downs Pittsburgh, 34-23, to head toward Bowl Season at 7-5 on the year.
Grayson James finished the game 20-of-28 for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Six of his pass completions were for at least 25 yards. Nine different receivers combined for the 20 completions, led by five from Lewis Bond (45 yards). Reed Harris hauled in three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Kamari Morales made four catches for 51 yards and a score. Jeremiah Franklin logged two catches for 53 yards.
On the ground, Kye Robichaux (21 rushes, 71 yards) and Jordan McDonald (nine carries, 60 yards) combined for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
James was firing out of the gate, with three of his first four completions going at least 25 yards. But it was Jordan McDonald who got the scoring going late in the first quarter. With just under two minutes left in the quarter, the junior running back carried the ball 36 yards for his second touchdown of the season. The point-after was no good, but BC led 6-0.
Boston College's special teams engineered a turnover in the second quarter, after Pitt muffed a punt at the BC 34-yard line. Bryant Worrell recovered the loose ball, giving the Eagles a fresh set of downs. BC would end that series with a punt.
Robichaux made it 13-0, driving into the end zone from three yards out with 6:35 left in the opening half. The scoring play was set up by another long completion from James, this time a 53-yard strike to Reed Harris, who carried it 23 yards after the catch, all the way to the Pitt three-yard line.
Pittsburgh found the end zone with less than four minutes remaining in the opening half, capping an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard passing TD.
The Eagles' defensive unit put points on the board, thanks to a pick-six play from Ty Clemons. The junior defensive lineman returned the errant pass from Pitt QB Nate Yarnell 55 yards to the end zone, extending the BC lead to 20-7 with 33 seconds left. Pitt would add a 57-yard field goal as the clock expired, making it 20-10 at the half.
In the third quarter, Pittsburgh cut it to 20-17 after a touchdown with just under eight minutes left on an eight-play, 65-yard drive. But the James and Harris connection continued, this time on a 28-yard precision TD strike with two and a half minutes left, to extend the Eagles' lead back to 10, at 27-17.
BC's defensive corps came up with another dynamite series in the fourth quarter, stuffing the Panthers' run attempts on third and fourth and short. After the turnover on downs, the Eagles got the ball on the Pitt 39 yard line. On the ensuing drive, BC successfully converted on fourth down and, two plays later, James and Morales linked up for a 15-yard touchdown with 6:12 to play, pushing the score to 34-17.
Pitt would tack on another touchdown with just under four minutes on the clock, but missed the two-point conversion attempt, making it 34-23.
Defensively, Donovan Ezeiruaku continued to carve his legacy into the Boston College record book, logging 3.5 sacks on the day - tying Mathias Kiwanuka and Mike Mamula for the program's single-game record. Additionally, the 3.5 sacks vs. Pitt pushed him to 16.5 sacks on the season, tying him with Harold Landry for BC's single-season standard.
He led BC with 10 tackles, including four solo, 4.5 for a loss, and the aforementioned 3.5 sacks. The Eagles sacked Pitt quarterback Nate Yarnell six times. Omar Stoudmire (2.0) and Joe Marinaro (0.5) also logged sacks on the day. KP Price made six tackles (five solo), while Marinaro had six and Khari Johnson and Ryan Turner made five tackles apiece.
As a team, Boston College compiled 381 yards of total offense (253 passing; 128 rushing). BC registered 18 first downs and was 5-of-14 on third down. The Eagles scored on three of their five trips to the red zone.
The Eagles await the matchup and location of their Bowl Game matchup, which will be announced on Sunday, Dec. 8.
