BC defeats Syracuse in a five-set thriller
SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- The Boston College volleyball team defeated Syracuse in five sets in the Women's Building Wednesday night with set scores of; 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, and 19-17.
Audrey Ross led the night with a season high 21 kills in the win over the Orange. Halle Schroder followed shortly behind adding 15 kills and 18 digs, notching her 12th double-double of the season. Aubrey Moore guided the offense adding 31 assists. The Eagles defense was led by Brooklyn Yelland tallying 21 digs while the front row was led by Julia Haggerty adding 11 blocks.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: Both teams opened the first set evenly matched, each going on three point runs. BC shot out to a four point lead off of two Orange errors, a kill by Schroder, and a kill by Roach, 12-8. Syracuse stayed in the fight, locking the score at 12 then again at 17. In the following stretch the Eagles recorded five straight points, and Syracuse had no choice but to call a timeout, down 17-22. A kill by Anna Herrington sealed the first set win for the Eagles, 25-20.
SET 2: Syracuse rebounded well coming out of the break and forced BC to take a timeout down, 18-14 after back-to-back Eagle errors. The Orange continued to put their foot on the gas gaining four of the next five points. BC took its second and final timeout, down 22-15. The Eagles were able to climb back within four off of a Yelland ace, but Syracuse was able to take a 25-20 set two victory.Â
SET 3: The Eagles dominated set three jumping to a 10-3 lead, Schroder and Ross each tallied two kills in the early advantage, to force a Syracuse timeout. The Orange strung together a few points to close the margin to four. A kill by Ross, a kill by Moore, and two 'Cuse errors forced the Orange to take another timeout, 17-9. A 5-1 run from the Eagles sealed the deal and won the third set, 25-16.  Â
SET 4: Similar to the first set, both teams battled back-and-forth in the first half of the fourth. Syracuse held a narrow 15-12 lead, and BC took a timeout to talk things over. Two Eagle kills and two errors from the Orange made Syracuse call a timeout, 17-15. 'Cuse impressed in the following stretch as the Orange regained a 20-19 lead on five straight points. BC was able to gain two quick points, but the Orange's momentum continued closing out the set on a 5-1 run. Syracuse was able to take a fourth set victory, 25-22, forcing a fifth and deciding set.Â
SET 5: BC had a hot start in the fifth set gaining a 6-2 advantage. The Orange answered, gaining four straight, 6-6. A Schroder kill regained an 8-7 advantage into the media timeout. A kill by Hoppes and two Syracuse errors forced the Orange to take its final timeout, down 11-13. A block by Haggerty and Herrington set the Eagles in position for set point, but two straight points from the Orange caused BC to call a timeout. Syracuse continued to fight, pushing the set, locking the deciding set at 15. Points traded four times until a kill by Herrington and a block by Roach was enough for BC to win the fifth set, 19-17.

The Eagles will face-off Syracuse on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. in the Margot Connell Rec Center.
