Sixth Birdball product to reach majors since 2018
LOS ANGELES — Former Eagle Emmet Sheehan made his Major League Baseball debut on Friday night for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starting at pitcher against the San Francisco Giants, Sheehan tossed six scoreless innings without surrendering a hit. The 45th Boston College Baseball alum to reach the show, Sheehan got the call after going 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA in 53 innings with Double-A Tulsa this season.
Emmet Sheehan, the No. 13-rated prospect in the Dodgers' system, spent three seasons with the Eagles with a 7-6 career record and 4.80 ERA, striking out 142 batters over three seasons.
The Dodgers selected Sheehan with the 192nd overall pick in the 6th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. In his first Major-League inning, Sheehan set down the Giants in order on just thirteen pitches, ten of which registered at least 95 MPH. The 23 year-old out of New York retired nine of the first ten Giants' batters he faced on Friday night, and the final six batters of his outing, finishing without a decision as San Francisco plated two in the eleventh inning to win.
Sheehan reached Double-A Tulsa in 2021, and in 2023, led all qualified Tulsa arms in strikeouts, WHIP, and opposing batting average. The righty becomes the fifth Eagle to play under Boston College head coach Mike Gambino to make his MLB debut in the last six seasons, joining Jake Alu (2023, Nationals), Chris Shaw (2018, Giants), Justin Dunn (2019, Mariners), and Michael King (2019, Yankees).
Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts said Sheehan will remain in the Dodgers' rotation for at least one more start.
