Fifth BC player to reach majors since 2018.
SAN FRANCISCO – Former Boston College baseball player Jake Alu made his Major League Baseball debut on Tuesday night for the Washington Nationals. Alu, who started in left field against the San Francisco Giants, became the 44th BC baseball alum to appear in the big leagues.
Alu was a four-year player for the Eagles, playing multiple positions, including pitching in nine games as a sophomore, before settling in as the starting third baseman his senior season. He hit .343 in his final year in 2019 and was named All-ACC third team as he totaled 81 hits, 51 runs and 18 doubles.
The Nationals selected Alu with the 723rd overall pick in the 24th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He is the lowest drafted player to reach the majors in BC history and Washington (2005-present) history as well as just the 76th player drafted and signed in the 24th round all-time. The 2019 draft marked the final draft with a 24th round as the MLB Draft was reduced to 20 rounds starting in 2021.
In 2022, Alu reached Triple-A Rochester and hit .323 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI. Across all levels, he hit .299 with 20 long balls, 81 runs and 81 RBI. This season, he is hitting .239 with five doubles and two home runs.
Alu is the fourth Eagle to play under BC head coach Mike Gambino to make his MLB debut in the last six seasons. Chris Shaw (2018, Giants), Justin Dunn (2019, Mariners) and Michael King (2019, Yankees) have all appeared in MLB games over that stretch. Donovan Casey also received his MLB call-up from the Nationals in 2022, but did not appear in a game.
