Boston College Knocks Off No. 2/3 Tennessee in Extras
March 07, 2023 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior left fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) threw out the potential game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth and hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th as Boston College baseball upset No. 2/3 Tennessee, 7-6 in 10 innings, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Tuesday night. The Eagles won their ninth in a row to improve to 9-1 and snapped the Volunteers 11-game win streak; moving UT to 11-3 on the year.
Â
BC score in seven of 10 turns at bat, but did not trail after the fifth inning. The Eagles held single-run leads three times between the sixth and ninth innings with UT answering on each occasion.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, second baseman Christian Moore hit a leadoff-home run to tie the game, 6-6. First baseman Blake Burke followed with a triple that put the tying run at third with nobody out. The Eagles replaced an outfielder with a fifth infielder and moved the two remaining outfielders into the gaps. A groundball to a drawn in infield went down as out number one. Third baseman Zane Denton then lined a ball right at Leary in the left field gap. He made the catch, hit the cutoff man down the third base line and the relay made it home for the tag to end the inning with a double play.
Â
Sophomore lefty Matthew Nunan (Egg Harbor, N.J.) entered in the jam in the ninth and escaped without further damage. Nunan (1-0) stayed on for the 10th and set the Volunteers down in order as he was perfect in 1.2 innings of relief. Seth Halvorsen (1-1) took the loss in two innings for UT with two runs charged on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Â
Boston College totaled four home runs, all solo shots, on the day. Senior center fielder Barry Walsh (Sterling, Mass.) hit the first of the night. Junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) was good for a pair of homers, including a go-ahead home run in the eighth.
