
Eagles Outlast Georgia Tech to Advance in ACC Tournament

BC Faces Miami in Quarterfinal Round

GREENSBORO, N.C. -Â Boston College women's basketball withstood a late rally to upend No. 14 seed Georgia Tech, 62-57, in the opening round of the Ally 2023 ACC Women's Basketball Tournament.Â
The Eagles advance to the quarterfinal round to face No. 6 seed Miami tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. on ACC Network. Boston College is now 16-16 on the season and have won back-to-back games.
Dontavia Waggoner, who returned from injury after missing the last nine games, turned in a team-high 16 points off the bench (10 in the fourth quarter) with seven rebounds and three steals. The redshirt junior was a game-high plus-16.Â
Maria Gakdeng battled foul trouble but scored 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Taina Mair filled up the stat sheet with a game-high 10 rebounds, six points, seven assists and two steals.Â
The Yellow Jackets came back from a 17-point deficit to slice the gap to just three on multiple occasions in the final 3:24. BC answered with points on all three positions to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay. Waggoner sealed the triumph with a pair at the line.Â
A slow start in the first quarter led to Georgia Tech jumping out to a 10-3 advantage in the first 4:41 of the contest. BC responded by scoring six of the next points to end the quarter down 12-9.
The Eagles started to take over in the second, where they held GT scoreless for nearly five minutes into second quarter, leading to a 16-12 advantage. BC pushed its lead to 27-18 going into the break after Gakdeng made a layup with under a minute left.Â
BC held the Yellow Jackets to just three field goals and six points, while the offense itself hit 7-of-10 attempts.Â
The BC lead increased to as much as 17 in the third when the Eagles engineered a 10-2 run. GT scored the last four points, giving the 11th-seeded Eagles a 13-point lead going into the fourth.Â
All seven players who saw action scored at least five points and helped hold GT to just 36.1 percent shooting from the field. The Eagles dominated the glass with a 45-25 showing and showed an improvement at the line finishing 18-for-24.Â
