
Eagles Drop Road Contest at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Boston College suffered a 79-72 setback to Syracuse on Sunday afternoon in the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Eagles fall to 14-12 and 4-9 in ACC play while Syracuse improves to 15-9 and 6-7 in the league
A pair of Eagles registered double-doubles on the afternoon. Maria Gakdeng turned in her best game of the season with a team and season-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. The sophomore forward also blocked five shots.
Taina Mair registered her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points (14 in the second half) and a team-high 10 assists. T'Yana Todd poured in 17 points, with 12 coming in the second half.
Trailing by as much as 22 in the third quarter, the Eagles sliced the gap down to eight points on multiple occasions. Syracuse held off the visitors' run until Mair scored five points in 16 seconds to bring the lead down to five with under a minute left. BC had a chance to cut it down to one possession but missed an open 3-pointer, leading to 'Cuse sealing the win.
BC shot 48 percent from the floor and held a 46-34 edge in points in the paint, but Syracuse scored 17 second-chance points and outscored BC by 11 at the line.
It was a quarter of runs to start the contest, as Syracuse hit three of its first four shots from outside the arc to take an 11-2 lead. The Eagles responded by scoring the next 13 points that was capped off by a Todd 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 15-11 edge. 'Cuse ended the period by scoring 13 of the next 15 to go into the second with a 24-17 lead.
The Orange extended its lead in the second quarter when they scored seven straight points. BC and 'Cuse hit the same number of field goals but the Orange went 7-of-8 at the line in the frame to help them go into the half with a double-digit lead.
BC returns to action on Thursday to face a ranked Duke team at 7 p.m. in Conte Forum.
