Eagles Fall at Maine in Weekend Series Opener
February 24, 2023 | Men's Hockey
ORONO, Maine – Maine held off numerous comeback attempts from Boston College and opened a two-game weekend series with a 6-3 Hockey East victory on Friday night at Alfond Arena.
The Eagles (12-13-6, 7-9-5 HEA) saw their three-game winning streak come to an end as the Black Bears (14-13-5, 8-9-4 HEA) clinched the three-game regular season series between the schools. Maine also moved two points ahead of BC in the league standings.
The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission following goals from Aidan Carney and Donovan Houle in the opening frame.
Maine pushed its lead to 3-0 at 7:52 of the second on the power play when Luke Antonacci wristed a shot inside the left post from the top of the right wing circle.
Boston College answered quickly with a pair of power play goals. Andre Gasseau finished a pass from Cutter Gauthier from the top of the crease at 9:21, then Gauthier fired a shot under the pads of Victor Ostman from the left wing at 11:37. Nikita Nesterenko assisted on both goals.
The Black Bears restored their two-goal cushion on the man advantage with just 1:55 left in the period as Jakob Sirota's center point shot was tipped over Benson's right shoulder.
Felix Trudeau snuck a rebound past Benson's right skate from the left circle six and a half minutes into the third to extend the lead for Maine.
Gauthier found Nesterenko on the weak side to finish past a sprawling Ostman with just under 10 minutes remaining for the Eagles' season-high third power play goal of the night.
BC pulled Benson during a power play for a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third with a chance to cut the lead to one, but Lynden Breen banked an empty-netter off the penalty box boards from his own zone with 2:57 remaining.
Gauthier and Nesterenko both had three-point nights with a goal and two assists. Trevor Kuntar also collected a pair of assists.
The teams close their weekend series on Saturday night in Orono at 7 p.m.
