Black Bears Edge Eagles 2-1 to Close Series
February 25, 2023 | Men's Hockey
ORONO, Maine – Victor Ostman made 31 saves and Maine held off a third period surge to edge Boston College on Saturday night by a 2-1 final at Alfond Arena to sweep a Hockey East weekend series.
The Eagles dropped to 12-14-6 overall and 7-10-5 in Hockey East with one weekend remaining in the regular season. The Black Bears improved to 15-13-5 (9-9-4 HEA) after the narrow victory.
BC was forced shorthanded four times in the first period and killed off the first three, including a brief two-man advantage for Maine. The Black Bears capitalized on their fourth chance as Nolan Renwick tipped a left wing shot-pass through the five-hole of Mitch Benson, who was otherwise stellar in the frame with 14 saves.
Boston College dominated the first half of the second period, registering 11 of the first 13 shots on goal, but Donovan Houle tipped a right wing shot from Grayson Arnott at 11:40 to double Maine's lead.
Cutter Gauthier answered less than two minutes later, streaking down the right wing before slipping a shot through Ostman's five-hole for his 16th of the season. Eamon Powell and Benson collected the assists on the play. BC out-shot Maine by a 20-5 margin in the second period.
The Eagles had several Grade-A opportunities to tie the score in the third period. Ostman stretched out his left pad to deny Gauthier in tight at the right post, and Mike Posma later rang the left post despite beating Ostman blocker side.
With Benson pulled for an extra attacker in the final minute, Nikita Nesterenko set up Andre Gasseau for a clean look in the slot but the rookie's one-timer barely missed the right post.
The Eagles won the shot battle 32-27, led by six shots from Gauthier.
Boston College closes the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against UConn. The Eagles begin the weekend by hosting the Huskies on Friday at Kelley Rink for Senior Night at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at (617) 552-GoBC or BCEagles.com.
