December 31, 2023 | Women's Basketball
DURHAM, N.C. - Boston College women's basketball fell to Duke in an 80-75 setback in the ACC opener inside Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles fall to 8-6 and 0-1 in ACC play. The Blue Devils are 9-4 and 1-1 in league action.
Andrea Daley led the offense with a team-high 18 points, while Teya Sidberry totaled 17 points with five field goals, went 6-of-8 from the line, grabbed five boards, and corralled four steals.
JoJo Lacey came off the bench for 13 points and four steals. Kaylah Ivey scored a season-high 11 points with five assists and three rebounds, and T'yana Todd scored 11 as well to round out the five players who scored in double figures.
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, shooting 56 percent from the floor. BC jumped out to a 15-7 lead midway through the frame after back-to-back baskets from Daley and Waggoner. BC later held an 18-10 advantage after trading 3-pointers with the Blue Devils. Duke cut the lead to one at the end of the first, giving the Eagles a 23-22 edge going into the second.
It was a back-and-forth contest in the second quarter until the hosts held a seven-point edge with under a minute left in the half. The Eagles scored three quick points to close out the second thanks in large part to a Lacey putback after Sidberry missed the back end of a pair at the line.
Both teams shot 55 percent or better from the field in the opening half, while Lacey led the offense with 13 points and Sidberry, 11.
The Blue Devils grew their lead to as large as nine in the third period, holding BC to under 30 percent from the field. However, four straight free throws from Sidberry and Nene Ndiaye sliced the lead to five going into the final period.
A 5-2 run after a Todd trifecta and a layup by Daley to start the fourth sliced the gap to a possession, capping off a 9-2 spurt going back to the third. However, the Blue Devils responded with a 7-2 run of their own, grabbing a nine-point advantage.
BC was able to cut the deficit to four with under a minute left, as Ivey scored nine of her points with three 3-pointers over two minutes. Duke held off BC, pulling away for the win.
The Eagles pulled down a season-high 24 offensive rebounds and forced Duke into 28 turnovers.
Boston College returns to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the ACC home opener against a potentially-ranked Miami team.
