No. 13 Black Bears Hold Off No. 1 Boston College 4-2 in Series Opener
November 10, 2023 | Men's Hockey
ORONO, Maine – No. 13 Maine scored a pair of goals early in the third period and held off a late surge from top-ranked Boston College for a 4-2 Hockey East victory on Friday night at sold out Alfond Arena.
The Eagles dropped to 7-2-0 (2-1-0 HEA), while the Black Bears improved to 6-1-0 (3-0-0 HEA).
After a scoreless first period, Maine took the lead when Lynden Breen followed a right wing shot that trickled through Jacob Fowler's pads at 4:26 of the second.
Jack Malone quickly answered for the Eagles on the power play at 5:57, finishing a tic-tac-toe passing play with Gabe Perreault and Cutter Gauthier at the left doorstep. The goal was the fourth of the season for the graduate transfer.
Maine restored its lead less than 90 seconds into the third directly off an offensive zone faceoff. The draw came to Donovan Villeneuve-Houle at the top of the left circle and he ripped a shot into the bottom right corner through a screen.
The Black Bears doubled their advantage two minutes later on a left wing one-timer from Bradly Nadeau that beat Fowler (34 saves) high blocker side.
Boston College cut the deficit in half with 8:33 remaining when Perreault deked around the left dot and slipped a centering pass for Ryan Leonard to finish between Victor Ostman's pads. Perreault added two assists to his team-high total (12) on the night and extended his point streak to seven games.
The Eagles pulled Fowler for an extra skater with 2:35 remaining in regulation, but a Grayson Arnott empty-netter from his own zone sealed the Maine victory with 1:02 on the clock.
The teams close the series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and TSN+ in Canada.
