BC Defeats Duke in Five Sets

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass- Boston College battled Duke in the Eagle's second five setter of the season, coming out on top Friday night. Scores of the set were 14-25, 25-21, 25-16, 14-25, and 15-13.
Duke opened set one fast, taking a 8-3 lead. The Eagles hit .026 tallying 8 kills, and the Blue Devils hit .400 adding 16 kills.
The Blue Devils carried the momentum from the first set going on a 5-0 run to open set two. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run led by Julia Haggerty and Halle Schroder with two blocks a piece. The set remained back and forth tying it up seven times until a 6-1 run by the Eagles put them ahead 18 -13. The set was won on a service error, 25-21.
Boston College took a commanding lead in set three with back-to-back aces by Sophia Lambros. The Eagles never lost the lead, dominating; 25-16.
In the fourth, Boston College would tie it early 9-9, but the Blue Devils took a 9-0 run, to secure the set 25-14.
Duke opened the fifth set fast leading 2-0. The Eagles responded with multiple 2-0 runs to take a dominating 11- 6 lead. The Blue Devils responded to the Eagle's match point going on a 3 - 0 run, until a solo Haggerty block won the set;15-13.
Haggerty led the Eagles in kills, with nine. Haggerty hit .533 for the match- best among the Eagles on the night. Jenna Pollock followed closely behind with eight kills. Anna Murphy led the Eagles defense with 26 digs- a team high on the season. Senior setters Sophia Lambros and Grace Penn added on 35 assists, Lambros led with 20. Haggerty posted a team high 11 blocks, leading the Eagles with 16 points on the night.
The Eagles record improves to 14-7 and 3-4 in ACC play and return to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 against North Carolina in the Margot Connell Recreation Center.
