Defense Holds FSU to Season Low in Points
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The momentum continued on Sunday for Boston College, as the Eagles knocked off Florida State in overtime, 77-71Â
The Eagles earn back-to-back ACC wins for the first time this season, improving to 13-5 and 3-2 in the league. BC handed Florida State its first ACC loss of the season. The Seminoles are now 15-3 and 4-1 in league action.Â
BC showcased a balanced scoring effort, while Dontavia Waggoner turned in a second straight game with 20-10. The junior totaled a team-high 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.Â
The Nashville native also recorded four steals and played an intricate part in holding Ta'Niya Latson to a season-low 10 points on 4-of-17 shooting. The freshman came in averaging an ACC-high 25.2 points per game.Â
Taina Mair stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points (13 in second half/OT) , a game-high seven assists and grabbed six off the glass. Four of her five shots were outside the arc. She also had a hand in holding the 'Noles to 71 points.Â
Andrea Daley turned in 12 points with nine rebounds, and Ally VanTimmeren came off the bench for a season-high 12 points.Â
BC outlasted FSU as it shot 6-of-9 over the final five minutes of regulation and into overtime. Daley scored eight of her points during the run, highlighted by a pair of layups in overtime to give BC the lead. The Eagles iced the game when VanTimmeren hit a layup before clinching the win at the line.Â
The Eagles held Florida State to a season-low 71 points, which is 17 less than their season average and just 41.2 percent shooting from the floor.Â
BC trailed early going into the second quarter after Erin Howard hit a 3-pointer before the buzzer to give the visitors a 16-11 edge.Â
With the score 27-21 in the Seminoles' favor in the second frame, JoJo Lacey started and finished a 13-0 surge over the final 3:50 of the half to give BC a 34-27 edge. The junior drilled a trifecta just before the half ended.Â
It was a half of runs in the third period, as FSU climbed back to take a 47-40 lead. BC responded by scoring the next seven points to tie the game up, and eventually both teams were tied going into the final period.Â
A layup by Daley followed by a 3-pointer from Lacey broke a 61-61 score to give BC a five-point lead. Makayla Timson's free throws and Sara Bejedi's trey sent the game into overtime.Â
The Eagles attempted a season-high 36 free throws and limited FSU to just 16 attempts. FSU averaged 23.5 free throws a game coming into Sunday.Â
BC will look for a third straight win on Thursday against Syracuse in Conte Forum at 7 p.m.Â
