CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Boston College suffered a 66-50 loss to Virginia on Sunday afternoon in John Paul Jones Arena.
The Eagles fall to 13-7 and 3-4 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers improve to 14-4 and 3-4 in the league.
Dontavia Waggoner paced the offense with 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and earned four steals. Maria Gakdeng chipped in with 10 points and blocked three shots.
JoJo Lacey registered a career-high 10 rebounds on top of seven points. Taina Mair dished out two assists, giving her 140 for the season and broke Kerry Curran's freshman mark of 139 in a single season.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as both teams shot under 35 percent from the floor. The Eagles held UVA scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, which led to a 6-0 start.
Boston College stretched its lead to 19-8 early in the second period after Waggoner and Mair scored on consecutive possessions. Virginia crawled back into the game to cut the deficit to one before Ally VanTimmeren's layup with 52 seconds left in the half gave BC a 28-25 edge going into the break.
The second half was the difference, as the Eagles struggled to get anything going on offense. UVA scored 17 of the final 21 points in the third quarter to go into the final period with a commanding lead and never looked back to pull away for the win.
Virginia shot 52.2 percent in the second half and hit 18 of its 27 free throws in the final two periods. The Eagles grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, but scored just 11 second-chance points compared to UVA's 20.
Boston College will look to rebound on Thursday when it travels to face Louisville at 7 p.m.
