BC outscores Penn 4-3 in shootout to win first ever meeting between schools
PHILADELPHIA -- The No. 20 Boston College Eagles (2-3, 0-0) got back to winning ways on Friday night, outlasting the Penn Quakers (0-3, 0-0) in a six round shootout, after battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods. The Eagles defense controlled the first half of the game, not allowing a single shot through the first thirty minutes. The Quakers got on the board in the third after executing a penalty corner, but junior Olivia Hahn tied it up with ten minutes left in regulation, with a very timely first goal of the season.Â
Both teams had their chances through the two overtime periods, but the decision ultimately came down to shots. Leading off the shootout, the trio of Milagros Arteta, Kara Heck, and Margo Carlin all converted on their attempts. After both teams scored three of their first five, Arteta scored her second shootout goal of the day and freshman goalie Carine Van Wiechen clinched the win on Penn's attempt.Â
Van Wiechen, making her fifth straight start for Boston College, put on another strong display in net, with four saves on five shots and a couple of big saves down the stretch in the shootout.Â
The Eagles will look to carry this momentum into Sunday, when they take on No. 12 Saint Joseph's at noon.Â
