
Three Eagles Selected on Final Day of MLB Draft

Trio of righty pitchers round out four-player class.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College right-handed pitcher were chosen on day three of the Major League Baseball Draft in Los Angeles. Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) was the first Eagle off the board on Tuesday as a 12th round selection of the Cincinnati Reds. Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.) and Max Gieg (Lynn, Mass.) followed in the 15th and 18th rounds, respectively.
As the 363rd overall pick, Pelio, an All-ACC Rookie Team selection following his freshman campaign in 2019, appeared in seven games out of the bullpen and made six starts. He struck out 21 batters in 18.2 innings of work to push his career total to 156 strikeouts in 177.2 innings. He is the first Eagle drafted by the Reds since Matt Gill (2019) and fourth overall.
Pelio, who also pitched for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2019, pitched this summer for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He had made six relief appearances with 13 strikeouts sand a 3.97 earned run average in 11.1 innings.
Mancini was taken by the Houston Astros with the 463rd overall pick. He pitched in the Friday night role for BC this season with a 4-4 record, 4.70 ERA, .253 batting average against and 63 strikeouts to just 24 walks in 76.2 innings. He is the fourth Eagle drafted by the Astros and first since JB MacDonald and Barry Butera were both selected in 2009.
Rounding out the Eagles' draft class, Gieg went to the Los Angeles Angels at No. 583 overall. He totaled 15 appearances, including seven starts. Gieg was 4-2 with a 2.78 ERA, .175 BAA and 26 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. He is the third BC player chosen by the Angels and first since John Leonard (2011).
Gieg began this summer on the Cape with the Cotuit Kettleers. In his second stint with Cotuit, he owned a 2.40 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 15 innings across eight relief outings.
A total of four Eagles were chosen as second baseman Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.) was selected at No. 147 in the fifth round by the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Four BC players taken in the draft is the most since 2018. All-time, 86 players have been drafted from BC with 26 in the last eight years.
