Nationals promote former BC outfielder Donovan Casey.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Boston College baseball player Donovan Casey received his Major League Baseball call-up on Thursday night from the Washington Nationals. He joins the Nationals in Pittsburgh for their series against the Pirates.
Â
Casey is the 44th BC player to reach the majors and fourth since 2018; joining former teammates Chris Shaw, who debuted in 2018 with the Giants, and Justin Dunn and Michael King, both of whom debuted in 2019; Dunn with the Mariners and King with the Yankees. Casey joins King, who made the Yankees opening day roster, as the second Eagle to be activated by a MLB team this season.
Â
Following a three-year career at Boston College, Casey was selected in the 20th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 610th overall pick. He is the latest round pick and latest overall pick from BC to reach the big leagues; a distinction previously owned by King (2016 12th round) and Joe Martinez (2005 12th round, 372nd overall).
Â
Casey spent four years in the Dodgers organization before being traded to the Nationals prior to the 2021 trade deadline as part of a package of four prospects in a deal that sent Max Scherzer and Trae Turner to LA. In his minor league career, Casey has appeared in 361 games; hitting .278 with 54 home runs, 205 RBI and 52 stolen bases. He hit .269 with 16 homers and 55 RBI in 2021 and was off to a .250 start with a home run and six RBI in just six games with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings.
Â
A two-way player in his time at BC, Casey hit .287 with 85 runs, 54 RBI and 22 steals in 135 career games. He made 33 appearances on the mound; going 5-2 with six saves and 37 strikeouts across 41 innings, while holding opponents to a .193 average. In 2017, Casey hit for the cycle against UMass and is the only player at BC to have hit for the cycle since 2017. He started 32 games, 29 in right field, during the Eagles' 2016 run to the NCAA Super Regionals. Casey was named to the Oxford All-Regional Team; garnering two hits in the opener and the game-winning RBI in game two to send the Eagles to the regional final.
Â
Casey is the No. 17 ranked prospect in the Nationals' system according Baseball America, as well as the organization's "Best Athlete", and No. 19 prospect by MLB.com.
