Eagles Walked Off in Opener by NC State
April 14, 2022 | Baseball
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Boston College baseball team was walked off in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to North Carolina State at Doak Field on Thursday night. Wolfpack center fielder Devonte Brown delivered the game-winning run to the plate on a one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice-fly.
Â
With two on and one out, BC right-hander Brendan Coffey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) nearly escaped the jam with a ground ball to short, but the ball was misplayed and everybody was safe. Coffey (1-2) took the loss in 1.2 innings of relief; having struck out three in his first inning of work.
Â
The Eagles (15-19, 3-13 ACC) twice grounded into inning-ending double plays with the bases loaded, including the seventh inning.
Â
BC senior right-hander Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.) lasted seven innings in the start with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He allowed three runs, only the first two of which were earned in the first two innings, and surrendered just five hits and two walks.
Â
For NC State (21-11, 8-7), right-hander Logan Whitaker was lifted after the fifth despite just one run against on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Wolfpack pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Lefty closer Chris Villaman (1-1) got the win; striking out the one batter he faced with a runner aboard in the top of the ninth.
