Hitters Dominate Series Opener
April 01, 2022 | Baseball
Leary hits team-leading 11th home run, tied for ninth most in a season in BC history.
Â
BC was spotted a four-run lead after one, taking advantage of an error that opened the door for four unearned runs. Senior catcher Peter Burns (Reading, Mass.) capped the scoring with a two-run home run; his first of the season.
Â
Wake tied the game in the fifth on a grand slam by third baseman Brock Wilken. It marked the final inning of work for BC senior right-hander Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.). He allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Â
In the seventh, Wilken put the Demon Deacons in front with a three-run home run. Wake Forest plated seven runs in the inning to push its lead to 11-4.
Â
Righty Rhett Lowder (6-1) bounced back from the four-run first to fire five-consecutive scoreless frames to keep the Demon Deacons in the game and was ultimately lifted with a seven-run lead. He surrendered seven hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
Â
The Eagles punched back in the bottom of the seventh with four runs, including a two-run home run by sophomore right fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.). Wake Forest responded immediately with a two-run home run by catcher Brendan Tinsman in a three-run frame.
