Abby Newhook Named Finalist for National Rookie of the Year

Newhook, the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, is one of five finalists.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College women's hockey player Abby Newhook has been named a finalist for the 2022 Women's National Rookie of the Year Award, as announced on Tuesday by the Women's Hockey Commissioners Association.
Last week, Newhook was named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year. The St. John's, Newfoundland native led all Hockey East first-year players in overall points (32), goals (18) and assists (15) as well as in conference points (25), goals (13) and assists (12) during the 2021-22 season. Her overall 0.94 points per game average led all Hockey East rookies and tied for second nationally, while she averaged 0.962 points per game in league games, to lead all rookies and rank 10th overall. Newhook's six game-winning goals on the year tied for second in the nation and led all first-year players and all Hockey East players. Additionally, Newhook earned three Hockey East Pro Ambition Rookie of the Month accolades and she also picked up six Rookie of the Week honors over the course of the 2021-22 season.
Boston College has had two previous Women's National Rookie of the Year winners, with the most recent coming in 2019-20 with Hannah Bilka. Alex Newhook, Abby's older brother, was named the 2019-20 Men's National Rookie of the Year. Bilka and Alex Newhook both winning national rookie of the year honors in 2019-20 make BC the only school in the country to have both the female and male winners during the same season.
The other four finalists include Cornell sophomore Lily Delianedis, whose freshman season was cancelled by Covid, along with Minnesota's Peyton Hemp, Saint Anselm's Tyra Turner and Mercyhurst's Vanessa Upson.
The national women's Rookie of the Year is chosen by a vote of the NCAA Division I schools' assistant coaches, with one vote per staff.
