Eagles Fall in Heartbreaker at Columbia
March 24, 2022 | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK - The Boston College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 54-51 setback to Columbia in the Sweet 16 of the WNIT on Thursday evening inside Levien Gymnasium.
The Eagles finish with a 21-12 record on the season, while Columbia advances to the next round to face Seton Hall.Â
Cameron Swartz turned in a game-high 24 points for her 13th 20-point performance of the season. She grabbed seven rebounds in the process. Taylor Soule was the other Eagle in double figures, scoring 14 points and pulling down seven (five offensive) off the glass.Â
Dontavia Waggoner stepped up off the bench, as she corralled a career-high 11 rebounds and tied a season best with nine points.Â
The Lions came back from a 17-point first-half deficit to eventually tie up the contest midway through the fourth quarter, 43-43. Swartz and Soule scored the next four points to give the Eagles a two-possession lead.Â
BC stayed in front until with 1:31 left in the game and holding on to a 51-48 edge, the Lions scored the final six points of the game. After Kaitlyn Davis hit the go-ahead shot to give CU the 54-51 advantage, BC's clean look from beyond the arc fell short.Â
The Eagles used their defense to dominate the first half, limiting CU to only seven field goals and 0-of-14 from 3-point range.Â
BC went on a 12-6 run over the final 6:32 of the first period to take a 21-11 advantage into the second frame. Columbia missed 10 of its first 11 shots, which aided in the Eagles claiming a 33-16 lead before the Lions hit a field goal to trail by 15 going into the break.Â
Boston College struggled from the field throughout the contest, particularly in the second half. Columbia made seven of its last 12 shots of the game to pull off the comeback.Â
The Eagles held the Lions to zero makes from deep for the first time since  2010.
Despite the loss, BC put forth a solid campaign with its second 20-win season in three years, the first postseason appearance since 2011 and three players earning All-ACC honors.Â
