BC Comeback Falls Just Short in Hockey East Quarterfinal at Northeastern
March 12, 2022 | Men's Hockey
BOSTON – Goals from Drew Helleson and Marshall Warren led a furious third period comeback, but No. 8 seed Boston College fell one goal short in a 3-2 defeat to top seed and regular season champion Northeastern in the Hockey East Quarterfinal on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
The Eagles close the 2021-22 season with a record of 15-18-5, while the Huskies advance to the Hockey East Semifinal at 25-11-1.
Down 3-0 entering the third period, the Eagles out-shot the Huskies 25-9 and had several chances to tie the game in the closing minutes with Eric Dop (33 saves) pulled for an extra skater. Devon Levi made 46 saves to preserve the lead down the stretch for NU.
After a scoreless first period, the Huskies opened the scoring 2:32 into the second when Gunnarwolfe Fontaine finished a loose puck under Dop's pads from the top of the crease.
Justin Hryckowian doubled the Huskies' lead near the midway point of the period, flipping a backhander glove side after a centering feed from Fontaine.
With under a minute left in the middle frame, Sam Colangelo drifted into the right wing circle and fired a shot into the top left corner to extend Northeastern's lead to 3-0.
Helleson followed a Jack McBain stuff attempt and buried a weak-angle backhand on the power play at 8:29 of the third to put BC on the board. Warren then cut the deficit to one with 3:48 remaining, deking into the high slot from the left point before firing a shot high glove side on Levi.
Warren closed the night with a career-high eight shots on goal as BC out-shot NU 48-36.
Boston College suffered just its second defeat in the last eight visits to Matthews Arena.
