Newhook was voted the league’s top first-year player by the conference coaches.
AMESBURY, Mass. – Boston College freshman forward Abby Newhook was named the Hockey East Pro Ambition's Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, being voted the league's top first-year player by the conference coaches.
Â
Newhook, who was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie squad last week, led all Hockey East first-year players in overall points (32), goals (18) and assists (15) as well as in conference points (25), goals (13) and assists (12) during the 2021-22 season. Her 25 conference points and 32 overall points were both good for ninth overall in the league. She led all first-year players with her plus-17 rating during conference play while her 84 shots on goal sat second among first-year players and tied for 13th overall. Her overall 0.94 points per game average led all Hockey East rookies and tied for second nationally, while she averaged 0.962 points per game in league games, to lead all rookies and rank 10th overall.
Â
Newhook's six game-winning goals on the year tied for second in the nation and led all first-year players and all Hockey East players. Five of her game-winning goals came in conference play to lead all league players. She was the first Hockey East rookie to record at least six game-winning goals in a season since Boston University's Sarah Lefort scored seven during the 2012-13 season and she was the first BC rookie to score at least four game-winning goals since Andie Anastos did it during the 2013-14 season. Newhook also assisted on two game-winning goals.
Â
The St. John's, Newfoundland native tallied 11 multi-point games on the year, with nine of those coming in Hockey East contests, while also adding in two multi-goal games and two multi-assist games. Newhook potted multiple goals in wins over New Hampshire (Oct. 16) and Providence (Nov. 13), and tallied a season-high three points on one goal and two assists in a win over Providence (Jan. 25).
Â
During the season, Newhook put together an eight-game goal scoring streak and a nine-game point streak. Her eight-game goal scoring streak (Jan. 21-Feb. 8) marked the longest in Hockey East since Boston University's Sammy Davis did the same during the 2018-19 season.
Â
Additionally, Newhook earned three Hockey East Pro Ambition Rookie of the Month accolades and she also picked up six Rookie of the Week honors over the course of the 2021-22 season.
Newhook is the seventh Hockey East Rookie of the Year in program history. She is the sixth Eagle to earn the award with Katie Crowley as head coach, with all seven having come with Crowley on staff.
