Pennsylvania native with more than 30 years coaching experience heads to the Heights
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley announced the hiring of John McNulty as the Eagles' offensive coordinator.
Â
A veteran of the coaching industry who has over 30 years of experience in both the NFL and collegiate ranks, McNulty heads to Chestnut Hill after serving as Notre Dame's tight ends coach since 2020.
Â
"John's one of the most well-respected offensive minds in our game, and we could not be more thrilled to welcome him and his family to the Heights," said Hafley. "His expertise as a play-caller combined with his experience coaching all phases of the offense will fit perfectly into our program."
Â
McNulty is set to begin his 17th season in the collegiate ranks in 2022 and has mentored seven All-Americans or freshman All-Americans during his career. The Scranton, Pa., native has also coached in the NFL for 15 seasons, including serving on the staff of former BC head coach Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville.
Â
"John McNulty is an outstanding football coach, very intelligent, a good communicator, excellent work ethic, always well prepared with a wealth of experience in both professional and college football," said Tom Coughlin. "John is a humble leader, all about the team, and players will enjoy his style and sense of humor. Congratulations, John!"
Â
During his two-year stint at Notre Dame as the tight end coach, he oversaw the development of Michael Mayer, who set Notre Dame single-season records for a tight end in receiving yards, receptions and receiving touchdowns.
Â
In 2020, en route to a berth in the College Football Playoff, Irish tight ends made noise in the pass and run game, led by eventual NFL draftee Tommy Tremble and Mayer.
Â
McNulty spent the 2019 season as an analyst at his alma mater, helping Penn State to a Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis.
Â
Earlier in his coaching career, he served two stints at Rutgers (2004-08, 2018), including three seasons as offensive coordinator.
Â
McNulty was Rutgers' play-caller in 2006 as the Scarlet Knights finished 11-2 overall and ended the season ranked 12th nationally.
Â
He directed one of the most prolific offenses in NCAA history in 2007, as the Scarlet Knights became the first team in FBS history with a 3,000-yard passer (Mike Teel), 2,000-yard rusher (Ray Rice) and a pair of 1,000-yard receivers (Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood). That season, the Scarlet Knights set school records for scoring, first downs and total offense. In addition, Britt and Underwood were the first teammates in BIG EAST history with 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
Â
Rutgers went to four bowls in five years during his first stint in New Jersey, including three straight bowl victories.
Â
McNulty's NFL experience included serving as the tight ends coach for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers for two seasons. He also coached the wide receivers for the Arizona Cardinals, including All-Pro selection Larry Fitzgerald.
Â
McNulty's NFL coaching career included serving as the quarterbacks coach in Tampa Bay as he mentored QB Mike Glennon to all-rookie honors during the 2013 season.
Â
He later spent two seasons as QB coach for the Titans, including Marcus Mariota's all-rookie campaign, which saw the QB tie Peyton Manning's record for games with at least three TD passes by a rookie (four). Mariota also broke Tennessee franchise rookie records for passing TDs (19), completions (230) and passing yards (2,818).
Â
Before his first stint with the Scarlet Knights, McNulty spent six seasons as an NFL assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1998-2002 under head coach Tom Coughlin and the Dallas Cowboys in 2003 Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells. During his six-year stint, McNulty helped his teams advance to three playoff berths. While in Jacksonville, he coached two of the NFL's top receiving duos in Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell. In 2000 and 2001, the pair combined for 390 receptions and 4,903 yards, while Smith earned All-Pro honors both seasons.
Â
McNulty began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Michigan from 1991-94. He then spent three seasons as wide receivers coach at Connecticut from 1995-97 before joining the NFL. McNulty played safety at Penn State from 1988-90, where he was a member of two Nittany Lion bowl teams.
Â
A native of Scranton, Pa., McNulty and his wife Kim have four daughters: Abigail, Allison, Megan and Kaitlyn.
