Benson Sharp in 1-1 Hockey East Tie with No. 10 Providence
December 02, 2022 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Mitch Benson stopped 39 of the 40 Friar shots he faced as Boston College skated to a 1-1 Hockey East tie with No. 10 Providence on Friday night at Kelley Rink. PC earned an extra league point by winning the shootout.
Rookie Cutter Gauthier netted his team-high eighth goal of the season for the Eagles, who moved to 5-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in Hockey East.
Gauthier handed the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 13:49 of the first period. Just 20 seconds into BC's first power play of the night, Eamon Powell set up Gauthier in the right circle for a heavy one-timer and the rookie snuck the shot past Philip Svedeback at the near post.
The Friars (9-3-4, 6-0-4 HEA) equalized less than three minutes later when Guillaume Richard finished a right wing centering pass from Cory Monds at the left post.
Boston College began the middle frame with a successful penalty kill and proceeded to kill off two more PC power plays in the period. Benson closed the second with 14 saves and had 27 stops through 40 minutes.
Benson registered five more saves in overtime, including a point blank save on Chase Yoder by closing his pads. Powell nearly picked out Cam Burke on a 2-on-1 to win the game, but Burke couldn't settle the pass on the weak side.
The Eagles went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and have now killed off 21 of their last 22 power plays faced.
BC dominated at the dot for the third game in a row, winning the faceoff battle 39-25.
The schools close their home-and-home series on Saturday night at Schneider Arena on ESPN+ and WEEI 850 AM at 7 p.m.
