Defense Holds GT to 28 Percent Shooting
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Four players in double figures and a lockdown defensive effort led the Boston College women's basketball team to a 74-62 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon in Conte Forum.
BC, winners of five of its last six games, improve to 10-4 and 1-1 in the ACC. Georgia Tech's falls to 8-3 and 0-1 in league action.
JoJo Lacey scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and added three rebounds. Andrea Daley turned in the first double-double of her career with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while the Miami, Fla. native also blocked three shots.
Dontavia Waggoner dropped 15 points, seven off the glass and shot 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Taina Mair stuffed the stat sheet for her second double-double of the season with 10 points, a personal-high 12 rebounds and dished out eight assists with four steals.
After a 4-4 tie early in the contest, the Eagles held Georgia Tech scoreless for a 4:20 stretch and went on a 15-4 run. Waggoner and Lacey scored 10 of the 15 points, highlighted by four straight baskets. Boston College hit three of its eight field goals from beyond the arc, which led to a 21-12 lead going into the second period.
Georgia Tech sliced the deficit to four on two occasions in the second, but the Eagles responded with 3-pointers on both possessions to keep the lead at seven. Daley hit a layup just before the buzzer to give BC a 41-34 advantage.
The defense for BC stymied the Yellow Jacket offense into missing nine straight shots and a 4:55 scoring drought that started with 38 seconds left in the first half and into the first 4:17 of the third frame. Boston College held GT to 4-of-21 shooting from the floor in the quarter, leading to the 56-40 advantage.
Boston College's lead was its largest at 18 early in the fourth before Georgia Tech got back to within seven points after a run of its own. A free throw by Daley and a layup by Maria Gakdeng pushed the lead back to double-digits. The hosts wouldn't lead by no less than nine points to pull away for the victory, snapping Georgia Tech's five-game win streak.
The Eagles close out non-conference play and their seven-game homestand on Thursday at 12 p.m. against Central Connecticut State.
